Koplin Del Rio Gallery is pleased to announce its fifth exhibition
of new work by Wisconsin based artist, Robert Schultz.
In this new body of work, the figure remains the main compositional
element. Schultz composes the page with the movement of the human
figure; the area contained by the body, as well as the use of
dark/light and positive/negative shapes. The elements within the
drawings: skin, hair, fabric, accessories, environmental textures
and line patterns are rendered in meticulous detail evoking the
impression of many surfaces. These elements create abstract shapes,
completing the composition of the drawings with the intention
of luring the viewer into the work of art.
The drawings of Robert Schultz convey a sense of emotional connectivity
to his models, tapping into the spirit and inner thoughts of the
individual chosen as the subject matter.
There is a sense of mystery throughout the work, evident in the
titles the artist has chosen: “Homage”, “Descent”,
“Flight”, “Cross”, “Hooded”
etc. These are intended to be discussions about the unforeseen
situations that human beings find themselves in, as well as touching
on our involvement with nature and the environment.
Schultz approaches his work with an enigmatic intention, allowing
the viewer to respond to the pieces, creating their own narrative.
This element is particularly evident in the larger drawings such
as “Descent”, which portrays a man descending a ladder.
Schultz also uses his trademark fade to white to create lost edges
in the figures, allowing to viewer to participate further in completing
the work.
Robert Schultz received his B.A and M.F.A. from the University
of Wisconsin. Schultz is included in several public collections
including the Art Institute of Chicago and The Arkansas Art Center.
