New Vintage Portraits

Jeffrey Carlson Reporting

Editor, Fine Art Today

October 30, 2014

Ira Korman's portraits derive from earlier ages -- days of pioneers, jazz musicians, guys and dolls, and war. His gift allows us to reflect on America's history through classic images of its people.

Working in carbon pencil on paper, Ira Korman creates miniature portraits that creatively evoke the passing of time. The costumes donned by his subjects transport us to an earlier era, as do their haircuts, postures, and accouterments. Korman's portraits transcend a naturalistic representation, achieving that with aplomb and then adding illusionistic marks of age.

With trompe l'oeil effect, Korman renders his portraits with folds, tears, and spots, lending them the aura of vintage photographs. That his subjects appear in black and white and on a miniature scale contributes to the phenomenon.
