Koplin Del Rio Gallery is pleased to announce Atelier: Drawings , an exhibition featuring works by John Lincoln in his second showing at the gallery.

The works on display will feature a selection of Lincoln's studio drawings from recent years. A veteran art educator for over 30 years, his work becomes process-oriented using studio environments that inform and train the artist's vision.

Working in pencil and ink wash, Lincoln's lyrical use of line and composition are subtle and expressive. The artist commonly works on small, intimate papers and then hinges them together to construct scroll-like drawings of studio sessions. This process creates a sprawling landscape of figures and patterns all linked by the masterful line work throughout. It is Lincoln's natural inquisitiveness and probing vision that lends an air of whimsy and freedom to his subjects.

In the various drawings of seated models, Lincoln assembles papers lengthwise that scan vertically through the space of the studio. Each section of the pieces explore different aspects of composition, and the spatial depth is collapsed using flat areas of pattern and shading that challenge the viewer's perspective. As in other works, Lincoln's gaze does not rest solely on the model as he accentuates the subtleties of the studio environment by describing his fellow artists, the background, as well as the tools of the trade.

John Lincoln lives and works in Pasadena, CA and Paris, France. He was a professor of Art in Drawing for over thirty years at such institutions as Cal Arts in Valencia, CA and California State University, Long Beach. His work is in a number of public collections including, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Long Beach Museum of Art, and the Santa Barbara Museum. This show runs concurrent with John Lincoln's exhibition entitled The New York and Paris Drawings at the Pollock Gallery, Southern Methodist University in Dallas Texas.
