Koplin Del Rio Gallery is pleased to present Entropy: The Art in Architects, a multi-media exhibition of work by a select group of Southern California Architects. The show’s title refers to a term used in physics for the principles of thermodynamics, of systems passing from a state of instability to one in a higher stationary order. The exhibition applies this principle to the process or system of the architect, more specifically, how the artistic endeavor of gathering self-information, finding architecture, converting space into tension, order, scale, environment and stability through structure, develops a state of higher rule.
When the public at large refers to an architect’s work, they primarily reflect on the tremendous efforts and strides involved in the building process, as well as the final physical state of the structure. In the show however, the architect demonstrates that the discipline cannot be isolated from the realm of fine art, portraying the fundamental link between drawing and the conception of architecture. From historical references such as Vitruvius’ Ten Books on Architecture to Giovanni Piranesi’s archeological drawings, drafting and modeling, historically are part of the creative process of creating spaces, at the same time are part of the broad spectrum of the fine arts; music, literature and science, all being sources of inspiration.
Not to be overlooked, are the exceptional paintings by Le Corbusier or the architectural sculptures of Mathias Goeritz, an artist recognized as an architect for his sculptural experiment named “el Eco”. This exhibition intends to revindicate the inevitable connection between architecture and fine arts including twenty prominent and prolific architects of three generations that have been curated into this installation. The show includes selections by each architect in a variety of mediums, ranging from drawings, sketches, renderings, physical and computer models to sculptures and fine artwork.
Participants include world renowned architects Thom Mayne and Michael Rotondi, who in the eighties challenged the traditional representation of orthogonal drafting, with renderings that were not just informational, but inspirational. Their concepts were not emulating a construction, but were the construction itself. Rob Quigley, Steven Ehrlich, Wes Jones, Eric Kahn, Eric Owen Moss, Michele Saee, George Yu, Teddy Cruz, Lorcan O’Herlihy, Hector Perez, Elena Manferdini, Jennifer Siegal, Marcelo Spina and Neil Denari invoke creations of evocative spaces, kinetic forms and engage in technology and nature in global terms. Provocative design methods, metaphysical experimentation, philosophical and innovative ideas describe the work of Karl Chu, Hernan Diaz Alonso, Greg Lynn, Marcos Novak, Gary Paige, David Erdman and Georgina Huljich. Entropy serves to examine the diverse techniques and tools employed by this multi-generational group of Architects, as well as enlightening the public perception of the creative process involved in each project.
Entropy: The Art in Architects was curated by Javier Gomez Alvarez-Tostado, Los Angeles Architect and David Jeno, Principal, Perez Design Group, Los Angeles.
