ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Working as
a limited edition master printer for several years has enabled
me to develop an appreciation for the fine art print. While I
often use printmaking techniques in my work, the drawing process
is of primary interest to me. Through drawings and fine art original
hand made prints, I am able to explore the creative processes
with the freedom to experiment. Graphite pencil drawings and the
fine art printmaking methods provide an effective means to communicate
feelings and emotions where words are often inadequate.
While
I continue to have a strong interest in all printmaking media,
in recent years the graphite pencil has been my primary medium
of choice. For several years now, I have worked with large-scale
graphite pencil portraits (46” X 36”). In these drawings,
I hope to show something of the individual’s true inner
self, that side of one’s personality that is often held
secure behind the external facade most often presented during
casual encounters. It is very difficult for us to reveal who we
really are because in doing so we present opportunities for others
to inflict injury. I feel that my ability to reach deep into the
personality of children in my drawing is more successful than
with adults, in particularly the adult male. The expressions captured
in the adult male are often one of defiance, self-confidence,
self-importance, pride, and personal satisfaction owing to a sense
of accomplishment and self-security. The accepting face of a child
often reminds us of who we really are.
